3D generation experiments

Image to 3D.

A prototype pipeline that turns one reference image into generated views and a 3D model you can inspect in the browser.

Depth study

A study plate in black halftone on paper. A flat silhouette of a jug, then three small views of it turned, then a large jug whose roundness is shown by the size of its dots, standing on a cyan shadow.
Depth study. A study drawn for this page. One flat picture of a jug becomes three turned views and then a form with depth, printed as halftone. It is an illustration, not output from the prototype.

The idea

Image to 3D explores how far a single reference image can be taken towards a usable 3D model. The prototype generates further views of the object from that image, builds a model from the views and shows it in a browser viewer.

How it works

Reference
Start from one image of the object.
Views
The pipeline produces views of the object from other angles.
Viewer
Inspect the model in 3D in the browser, with sliders to adjust the result.
Editing
Paint a mask over part of a generated view and regenerate it.

How it’s built

Front end
Next.js, with a react-three-fiber viewer.
Back end
A Python FastAPI service that runs the generation models.
