Sky photo reader

Skyread.

Photograph the sky and get the name of every cloud in the frame, and whether rain is on the way.

iPhonePaused prototype
A Skyread reading on iPhone: a photograph of a towering cloud above the result Cu con, cumulus congestus, with high confidence and a 40 percent chance of rain.

Point your phone at the sky.

The idea

Skyread is an iPhone prototype for reading the sky from a photograph. You choose a picture and the app names each cloud type in the frame, says how confident it is and estimates the chance of rain.

The local forecast is brought in separately, so a reading can say whether the forecast agrees with the sky.

What a reading shows

Cloud type
The name of the cloud, its abbreviation and a plain description.
Rain
A chance of rain for the next two hours, with the reasoning behind it.
Height
A chart of where each cloud sits, from its usual base to how high it builds.
Explanation
What the cloud is, how to spot it and what it means for the weather.

Screens

Captures of the prototype running its built-in sample reading.

Availability

Skyread is paused. Readings are made by a cloud vision model, so photographs leave the phone. It was not released on the App Store or TestFlight.
